Students share hope, help for breaking the cycle of self-destructive behavior
Courtney Lovett didn't want to let her friends down. Knowing that her friends wanted her to be happy, and disapproved of her compulsive urge to cut herself, helped Lovett break the cycle of her self-destructive behavior. Now Lovett and other students at West Brook, a high school on the East Coast, are reaching out to other young people, sharing their experiences in an effort to foster prevention and provide hope to others struggling with self-harming behaviors.

Mindful Eating Roadblocks (Part 3)
Eating things we don't really want is part of the "mindless eating" phenomenon that is so prevalent in our society. Hunger has a wide range of intensities. Pay attention to your hunger and fullness cues. There is a huge correlation between the phenomenon of sneak-eating and problematic relationships with food and body image. This article addresses these three roadblocks to mindful eating.

Mindful Eating Roadblocks (Part 2)
A recent survey showed that Americans are eating more but enjoying it less. Just 39% of adults in this survey say they enjoy eating "a great deal," down from the 48% who said the same in a survey in 1989. Also, the survey found that the decline in enjoyment of eating has been greater among those who consider themselves "overweight" than among those who consider themselves "just about the right weight." When you're not happy with your body, you're not enjoying one of life's greatest pleasures: eating.

Mindful Eating Roadblocks (Part 1)
There are five major roadblocks to mindful eating, and this article addresses distracted eating.

Simple Ways to Nurture Your Child's Positive Body Image
With spring around the corner, kids, tweens and teens across the country will doff sweaters for tank tops and jeans for shorts. And as a parent, you may feel more conscious than ever of our society's preoccupation with body image and how it affects your child. Just as concerning as the rise in childhood obesity is the rising number of children—even very young children—who are obsessed with being thin. So how do you help your daughter or son develop a healthy, realistic body image in a society obsessed with thin and beautiful?

Binge-eating is a sign of despair
Many people binge-eat, or eat compulsively. While they are alarmed and shamed by it, they don't see a way out. In working to overcome binge-eating, it is important to learn to recognize what triggers episodes, and to find alternative, constructive coping strategies.

Would you recognise an eating disorder in your child?
Because many of the behaviours of an eating disorder are socially desirable—things like self-discipline, control and 'taking care of' food and weight, it can be easy for parents and teachers to miss the warning signs.

How to Help Someone With Disordered Eating
It is often difficult for family and friends to understand why someone they love is experiencing food and weight problems. Although frustrating, it is important to realize that only the person experiencing the difficulty can make the decision to get help and choose what kind of help they need and want. This article provides helpful tips and suggestions, as well as links to valuable resources.

How to Love the Skin You're In
I know of no other season that causes women so much angst as the summertime—that glorious time of year when it's hot and muggy out and we're invited to the beach/pool/lake to enjoy the good weather by donning our bathing suits. I'm sure I'm not alone when I state that nothing makes me nuttier than when I'm expected to wear a bathing suit out in public. Why does this happen to me and to so many of us? Summer will be more enjoyable if you remember these tips.

Dangers of Making too Big a Meal of Eating Disorders
While eating disorders are undoubtedly unpleasant and quite often life threatening, pushing too many problem eaters and hardcore dieters towards definitive eating disorder status may be causing harm. Is there a problematic eating disorders bandwagon on the roll?
