Participants needed for research studies

Helping victims of sexual assault heal and recover

Women who have experienced a sexual assault within the past two years and are 18 years of age or older are invited to participate in a study exploring how treating oneself with kindness and compassion may help victims of sexual violence heal and recover. Participants will be asked to complete a number of questionnaires that ask questions about their background, experience(s) of sexual assault and other stressful events, psychological and physical health, and different ways of treating themselves. It is expected to take approximately 30-45 minutes to complete the study. Participants can complete the questionnaires either on paper, by first contacting the researcher to receive a research package, or, they can participate through the internet, where the survey is accessible on-line at https://surveys.oise.utoronto.ca/surveyviewer2/index.php?surveyID=VDRP3.

For every participant a monetary donation will be given to a charity organization in Canada dedicated to working to end violence against women.

The study is being conducted through the Counselling Psychology Program of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. It has received ethics clearance through the Social Sciences, Humanities and Education Research Board of the University of Toronto, and is being funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).

Should you have any further questions regarding this study, please feel welcome to contact me, Angèle Close, at (226) 220-0991 or aclose@oise.utoronto.ca or my supervisor, Dr. Lana Stermac, at (416) 978-0722 or lstermac@oise.utoronto.ca.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Best Bet by Laura Pedersen

Best Bet is Pedersen's fourth and final novel featuring card shark and wild child-turned-college student Hallie Palmer, who last appeared in The Big Shuffle (Ballantine Books). As with Pedersen's previous award-winning novels in the series, Best Bet is both humorous and heartfelt. The novel underscores the importance of friends, family and a sense of belonging.

More about Best Bet (iUniverse; trade paperback; October 2009)

Since Hallie's father died and left behind ten children, money at the Palmer household is tighter than ever. And just when Hallie thought she was graduating from college, it turns out she's four credits short. A professor needs one more student for a project that will take her around the world, only Hallie's longtime boyfriend Craig has another proposition.

Thus begins Hallie's great odyssey outside the safety of Cosgrove County and the sixty-mile radius in which she's functioned for her entire life. But somehow escaping home doesn't translate into leaving behind all of her problems, and, unfortunately not all can be solved by putting her superior gambling skills to work. Eventually, it's time to return home, where Hallie must finally face the biggest decision of her life.
