How to Make Natural Easter Egg Color Dye

It’s Easter and that means it’s time to color eggs! If you are like a lot of parents, you want to encourage your family to consume natural and healthy foods every day. Why not take the extra step and color your Easter eggs with natural food colors?
When you use a natural dye, your eggs will have a natural, dry, fairly dull finish. Rubbing just a little olive oil over the egg will give it a shine. The dull finished egg, however, is beautiful!

How to create your own natural egg coloring dye.

  • Boil your eggs until they are hard and let them cool completely.

  • Add 1 cup of water for each cup of food/spice/liquid to create your dye in a small pot.

  • Bring the water to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for about ½ an hour. The color of the liquid in the pot will be darker than your egg will be.

  • After the water has boiled, strain the liquid into a bowl and add 3 teaspoons of white vinegar. (3 teaspoons of vinegar per cup of dye)

  • While the dye is still warm, lower your eggs into the bowl. The longer you leave the eggs in, the darker your color. You can leave the eggs in for minutes, hours, or overnight.

  • Remove the eggs from the dye and let them dry in an egg carton or someplace where they will not be handled very much until they are completely dry.
