Science & You: Create maps at home for visually impaired people
Achievement in science and technology is honored all across Canada this month - and when it comes to innovation in this field, there is no better news than a development to improve the lifestyles of people with disabilities.

Take a look at vision loss
Many misperceptions exist about vision loss. For example, total blindness is seldom experienced as total blackness. Some describe it as a grey mist. Different eye conditions present varying degrees of vision loss.

Resolutions for healthy vision
Canada is in the midst of a vision loss crisis. The incidence of age-related vision loss in Canada is soaring due to our aging population. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of blindness in Canadians over 50 with 78,000 new cases each year; this number is expected to triple by 2025. Already, one in four Canadians will experience severe vision loss in their lifetime. The CNIB encourages everyone to take a proactive approach to their vision health by making the following resolutions to help prevent vision loss.

CNIB leads the way in vision loss rehabilitation
The Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) was founded in 1918 to help soldiers blinded in battle. Today, 87 years later, the CNIB is the country's primary provider of vision loss support and rehabilitation services to people of all ages with varying degrees of vision loss.

People over 50 at risk of vision loss
They call the years of retirement the "golden years", but for many they will be years shadowed in blindness. If you're over 50, your vision could be at risk. More people are affected by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) than glaucoma and cataracts combined; and AMD is four times more common than Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease combined.
